We’ve been foraging in the woods, hedgerows and fields around our house for years! Gathering wild food is great fun and hugely rewarding, but you do have to be VERY, VERY careful about what you pick. Either go with someone who knows what they’re doing or take a detailed foraging guide book with you to safely identify plants, seeds, berries and mushrooms BEFORE you eat them.
And make sure you leave plenty of food for the wildlife and enough to grow again next year. However, most important of all is that when you taste your foraged jam, sip your wild syrup or enjoy a wild-leaf salad, that you feel all that natural, free and wild goodness coursing through your veins! Being this self-sufficient is a fantastic feeling and a true taste of ‘the good life’…….
Once we’ve safely identified our foraged goodies, the cooking and eating can begin! I’ve included some of our favourite foraging recipes in this section, all of which are gluten free, dairy free and with no added refined sugar. I’ve always found it ironic that we gather this wonderfully healthy, wild produce and add a whole load of sugar to it, so I began experimenting with different ingredients a while back and was amazed at the outcome. The aim has always been to create healthier versions of old favourites!
I hope you enjoy trying them as much as we enjoy making them.
Happy foraging and very happy eating……
I’ve just read through your blog, what a wonderful place to spend a little time! Love your approach to veg growing eating and free range children! 🙂 xxx
